Dr. Tashmatov was a distinguished agricultural economist and a respected leader whose work shaped agricultural research and development systems across Central Asia and the Caucasus for more than three decades. His contribution extended beyond institutions and programs—he helped build a regional community grounded in cooperation, knowledge exchange, and shared purpose.

He served CACAARI in key leadership positions, including as Executive Secretary and Vice President, guiding the Association through important stages of its development. Under his leadership, CACAARI strengthened its engagement with National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS), expanded partnerships across the region and globally, and reinforced its role as a platform connecting institutions, people, and ideas.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Tashmatov held senior roles with ICARDA, UNDP, and the Asian Development Bank projects, and worked closely with global partners, including the World Bank and CGIAR centers. His work contributed to agricultural policy reform, institutional strengthening, and the implementation of development initiatives across the region. He also served in academia as Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration.

Dr. Tashmatov held a PhD in Agricultural Economics and authored and co-authored over 30 publications, contributing to regional and global knowledge on agricultural development. His work was characterized by a rare combination of analytical strength, practical understanding, and commitment to real-world impact.

Beyond his formal roles, Dr. Tashmatov was a mentor to many. He supported colleagues, guided younger professionals, and remained open, accessible, and engaged with those around him. His influence is reflected not only in institutions, but in the many people he helped shape over the years.

In his final years, he continued to serve CACAARI with dedication and integrity, contributing to its strategic direction and regional engagement.

Dr. Tashmatov’s passing is a profound loss for CACAARI and for the wider agricultural research and development community. His legacy will live on through the institutions he strengthened, the partnerships he built, and the people he guided.

CACAARI extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
