WORKSHOP ON REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION SYSTEM IN CAC

A workshop to elaborate strategy and work plan for the Regional Agricultural Information System (RAIS) for CAC was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 15-16 January 2007. It was organized by the CAC Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (CACAARI) in partnership with the Global Forum for Agricultural Research (GFAR) and ICARDA-CAC. The Workshop was inaugurated by Dr Raj Paroda, Regional Coordinator, ICARDA-CAC and Head, PFU-CGIAR. Dr Abdushukur Khanazarov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan and Executive Secretary, CACAARI, followed with his welcome address.
Dr Ajit Maru, Agricultural Research Officer, GFAR Secretariat; Dr Sahdev Singh, ARIS Coordinator for APAARI; Mrs. Taraneh Ebrahimi, ARIS Coordinator for AARINENA; and Mr. Michal Demes, Information Management Specialist, FAO-SEUR/KCEF, shared their experiences of developing agricultural information systems. Presentations on the current status of agricultural information systems in CAC countries were made by National Information Nodal Points (NINPs). Steering Committee for CAC-RAIS has been established. Participants also discussed a blueprint of the workplan for 2007-09 and agreed that a Working Group, consisting of NINPs and representatives of GFAR and ICARDA, would prepare a detailed draft workplan for the approval of the Steering Committee. Subsequently, NINPs will implement the workplan in their countries.
