The Fifth Coordination Committee Meeting of the Central Asian and Transcaucasian Network on Plant Genetic Resources (CATCN-PGR) was held on 18-20 January, 2007 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Meeting was jointly organized by Bioversity International, ICARDA and GCDT, and attended by the National PGR Coordinators from all the eight CAC countries, representatives of international organizations, eminent PGR scientists from across the CAC region and an observer from the All-Russian N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry. The main objectives of the Meeting were to review outcomes of the Network activities in 2005-2006, country reports on PGR conservation and documentation, check current status of IT-PGRFA, as well as to review and approve national and regional strategies on PGR conservation and develop a work plan for 2007-2008. Meeting agenda also included selection and appointment of Chairman of Coordination Committee of CATCN-PGR for the coming period. Reported outcomes covered new projects supported by UNEP-GEF, GCDT, ACIAR and TCF. Activities under these projects will constitute an important part of 2007-08 work plan and include the regional strategy on PGR conservation drafted during the workshop, priorities in the area of in situ/on farm and ex situ conservation, study and documentation of PGR, exchange of information and germplasm, and a number of other important issues. Acad. Jamin Akimaliev from Kyrgyzstan was elected as the new Network Chairman for 2007-2008, and Dr Zeynal Akparov from Azerbaijan was appointed as the Deputy Chairman. The next Coordination Committee Meeting will be held in early September 2008, in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan.
